Jugendmedienkommission, Media review panel in Vienna, Austria
Jugendmedienkommission is a media review panel in Vienna that assigns age recommendations for films and digital content across Austria. This panel evaluates audiovisual works and other media formats, then publishes its assessments in an accessible database.
The panel was founded in 1948 as the Youth Film Commission to evaluate films for young audiences. In 2001, it received its current name to respond to changes in the digital media world.
The commission works according to UN Convention on Child Rights and Council recommendations regarding youth protection in audiovisual media.
The commission makes its assessments available in a database that holds entries from 2000 onward and provides information on age ratings. Around 400 films are newly reviewed each year, with explanations that can be accessed online.
The database contains detailed explanations for each age rating and marks content with positive assessments for different age groups from 0 to 18 years. Each rating explains why a particular medium is suitable or unsuitable for an age group.
