Minoritenkirche, Gothic church in Innere Stadt, Austria
The Minoritenkirche is a Gothic church in the Innere Stadt district and features French architectural style with high vaulted ceilings, pointed arches, and large stained glass windows. The building comprises three naves and displays carefully crafted interior details throughout its spacious layout.
Construction of the church began in 1276 under King Ottokar II of Bohemia and extended over several decades to complete. Following Turkish sieges, the building underwent multiple reconstructions and restorations.
The church serves as a gathering place for Italian-speaking communities and reflects their spiritual traditions. On the northern wall, you will find a notable mosaic reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, recreated at the same dimensions as the original painting.
The church is easily reached from Herrengasse U-Bahn station and welcomes visitors throughout the day. Regular services are held, offering moments for quiet reflection and contemplation.
In 2021, the Italian Congregation Mary of the Snows handed over the church to the Society of Saint Pius X, marking a shift in its religious administration. This transfer represented a notable turning point in the site's long history of use.
