Laudon Palace, Baroque castle in Penzing, Austria.
Laudon Palace is a Baroque castle in the Vienna district of Penzing, located at Mauerbachstrasse 43-45 and surrounded by a moat. The building has twelve formal rooms and sits within a park that wraps around the main structure.
Field Marshal Gideon Ernst von Laudon bought the estate in 1776 and lived there until his death in 1790. It later passed to the Republic of Austria, which has used it for administrative and training purposes ever since.
The Freskensaal inside displays wall paintings by Johann Baptist Wenzel Bergl showing Maria Theresa as ruler of four continents. This was a direct visual statement about the power of the Habsburg house at the time.
The estate now serves as a training and administrative facility for the Republic of Austria and is not regularly open to the public. It is worth checking in advance when tours or events such as concerts or weddings are scheduled.
The park around the castle still follows the garden layout that Field Marshal Laudon personally designed, which makes him a rare example of a military figure with a strong interest in garden planning. Original 18th-century garden layouts this close to Vienna are hard to find.
