Stadt des Kindes, Child welfare center in Penzing, Austria

Stadt des Kindes is a former residential complex with educational facilities in Vienna's Penzing district, designed specifically to house and teach children. The site consists of multiple buildings arranged to provide sleeping areas, classrooms, and shared spaces all within one location.

The facility was built in the 1970s to provide housing and schooling for children from difficult circumstances. It closed after operating for 30 years, marking the end of an important chapter in Vienna's approach to child welfare.

The complex was designed so that children from Vienna's care system lived in an open structure within the Weidlingau district centre rather than in a closed institution. Its public facilities — swimming pool, sports hall, sports ground, ceramics workshop, café and theatre — were shared with local residents. The architect Anton Schweighofer won the 1969 competition with this integrated concept, developed with city councillor Maria Jacobi.

The complex cannot be visited: it closed in 2002 and was partly demolished from 25 August 2008, with the remaining part converted into a residential building. The site lies in Weidlingau at Vienna's western edge, in Penzing; the former home is not open to the public, so it can only be seen from outside.

A filmmaker documented the facility's final days and recorded interviews with people who had grown up there. These recordings capture personal stories from residents that might otherwise have been forgotten.
