Schloss Ernegg, Heritage castle in Steinakirchen am Forst, Austria.

Schloss Ernegg is a four-sided, three-storey castle above the steep bank of the Kleine Erlauf in Ernegg, Steinakirchen am Forst. Its west entrance has a round-arched portal, and the irregular facades reflect successive building phases. The skewed inner courtyard is lined on three sides by three-storey arcades with illusionistic wall painting; a round staircase tower projects from the north courtyard facade, and the chapel juts south at the southwest corner.

A castle of the Hofmark Steinakirchen of the Bishop of Regensburg first stood on the site. From 1527 Wolfgang von Öder zu Götzendorf and his descendants built a four-sided castle with a corner tower and arcaded courtyard; Reichard Streun von Schwarzenau continued from 1596. The Auersperg family has owned it since 1656.

The chapel projecting from the southwest corner ends in a round tower and has a groin vault; it is documented in 1330 and was consecrated to Saint Bartholomew in 1675. It is a private castle chapel, not open to visitors, so it is seen only from the courtyard side.

Schloss Ernegg is run as a hotel at Ernegg 1 in the Ernegg cadastral district of Steinakirchen am Forst. Guests sleep in the former castle itself, and the rooms also serve private and corporate functions. The building stands above a steep slope dropping to the Kleine Erlauf, and a spruce-lined drive leads in from the west.

The Auersperg family has owned this castle continuously since 1656, making it one of the longest-held family properties in the region. This unbroken ownership has shaped how the place is maintained and experienced by visitors today.
