Schieferstein, Mountain summit in Upper Austria, Austria

Schieferstein is a summit in the Oberösterreichische Voralpen range rising to 1,206 meters above sea level. The mountain features mixed terrain with forested slopes and rocky sections that create varied conditions across different climbing routes.

The Schieferstein lies on a west-east ridge running from Losenstein over the Pfennigstein (759 m) and the Steinerner Jäger (1185 m) to the main summit and on to the Schratlboden (945 m) toward Großraming. Near the Steinerner Jäger and the main summit the mountain drops in partly vertical walls to the north and south, built of massive Lower Jurassic red limestone.

The name Steinerner Jäger (Stone Hunter) belongs to a 1,185 m rock formation on the ridge between Losenstein and the Schieferstein summit. Climbers pass it on the marked routes from Losenstein and the Habichler parking area; its vertical walls of Lower Jurassic red limestone face north and south.

Hiking here requires sturdy footwear and care on exposed rock sections, as the trail includes steep passages and technical terrain. Weather conditions affect safety significantly, especially on wet stone where traction becomes limited.

The 80-metre transmitter tower Losenstein-Habichl stands east of the summit at 867 m and broadcasts Ö3 on 101.5 MHz, Ö1 on 90.6 MHz and Radio Oberösterreich on 95.9 MHz, each at only 10 watts. The south face also holds sport climbing routes such as Triple A, graded VII- on the UIAA scale.
