Kreuzkarspitze, Alpine summit in Tyrol, Austria
The Kreuzkarspitze rises to 2587 meters within the Hornbach chain of the Allgäu Alps and displays steep rock faces with prominent ridges. The terrain consists of rough rock formations and narrow slopes that are typical of this range.
The first documented ascent took place in 1892 when mountaineer Chr. Wolff reached the summit and established the route that later became standard. This first ascent marked the beginning of regular visitation by climbers.
The name refers to a nearby cirque called Kreuz, named after farmers who placed protective crosses while crossing these high Alpine passages. These markers were important guides for people regularly traveling through difficult terrain.
The ascent begins in Elbigenalp in the Lechtal valley and follows the Enzensperger Way via Balschtekar to the summit notch. The route requires secure footing and a head for heights, so preparation and proper equipment are advisable.
The summit sits directly on the municipal boundary between Elbigenalp and Hinterhornbach, where two distinct valley regions meet at a single point. This location makes the mountain a geographic meeting point of two different landscapes.
