Liebfrauenbergkirche

The Liebfrauenbergkirche is a fortified parish church situated on a hillside in Rankweil, featuring thick defensive walls and covered walkways with narrow windows for shooting. An entrance tower rises on the eastern side of the building.

The Counts of Montfort originally built this as a fortified religious site in the medieval period, and major reconstruction beginning in 1470 transformed its character. This renovation period shaped the building into its present form.

The chapel houses a carved figure of Mary and Child created in the 15th century, surrounded by an ornate baroque altar. This space draws pilgrims who come seeking prayers and spiritual comfort.

The site is positioned on a hilltop and offers views across the surroundings, but reaching it requires a climb. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for stairs or sloped pathways.

A quartz marble stone in the Fridolin chapel bears surface marks from centuries of worshippers kneeling there in prayer. These silent impressions record a long tradition of personal devotion in that space.
