The Liebfrauenbergkirche is a fortified parish church on a hilltop in Rankweil, Austria, with thick defensive walls, covered walkways, and narrow windows built for shooting. An entrance tower stands on the eastern side of the structure.
The site was originally built by the Counts of Montfort as a fortified religious place in the medieval period. A major rebuilding starting in 1470 gave the structure the form it still has today.
The church draws pilgrims who come to pray before a carved figure of Mary and Child, housed within a baroque altar in one of the chapels. The site is still actively used for religious gatherings and personal devotion today.
The church sits on a hill and can only be reached by climbing stairs or sloped paths, so sturdy shoes are a good idea. From the top, there are open views over the surrounding landscape that make the walk worthwhile.
