Schloss Achleiten, Medieval château in Kematen an der Krems, Austria

Schloss Achleiten is a castle in Kematen an der Krems, Austria, featuring architectural elements typical of 18th-century noble residences. The building with its distinctive tower stands where a farmhouse previously occupied the land.

Abbot Gregor I Plaichshirn commissioned the current castle between 1727 and 1734 as a replacement structure on farmland. It later passed to Jaromír von Škoda and subsequently to the von Weichs family.

The castle takes its name from its location along the Krems and reflects how local nobility chose to build their homes with certain architectural preferences. The surviving structure shows what mattered to wealthy families in terms of design and display.

The castle sits in a rural area near the Krems river in Upper Austria and can be reached on foot or by car. Visitors should note this is a private, protected building viewable only from the exterior.

The castle acquired a notable industrial connection when Jaromír von Škoda, brother of the Škoda Works founder, purchased it in 1894. This detail links the modest estate to a significant chapter of European industrial history.
