Schloss Kremsegg

Schloss Kremsegg, Medieval castle in Kremsmünster, Austria

Schloss Kremsegg is a fortified noble residence in Kremsmünster featuring a two-story rectangular structure with arcades and approached via a tree-lined avenue. The complex connects the main building with a cross wing and commands a prominent position on elevated terrain above the Krems River.

The first documented record dates to 1235 when the Rot family built a noble estate on a hill overlooking the Krems. During the 17th century, the monastery of Kremsmünster acquired and maintained the property for centuries.

The castle once served as a home for an extensive collection of brass instruments and pianos, reflecting how such buildings can preserve artistic treasures. This period shaped how people today view and experience the place.

The building requires advance arrangement for visits since it is not freely open to the public on a daily basis. The site is best reached by train from Linz or by car via the A1 highway, depending on your preference.

A Latin inscription above the main entrance marks the 17th-century purchase by Abbot Anton Wolfradt and commemorates this significant acquisition. This inscription quietly testifies to the monastery's connection with the property.
