Pontlatz barracks, Military barracks in Landeck, Austria
Pontlatz barracks is a military installation in Landeck comprising three residential buildings, a command center, a school building, and operational facilities located on Urichstraße 48. The complex serves as a base for alpine infantry units and emergency response operations in the mountain region.
The barracks was built in 1937 during the First Republic and initially housed units from the Vienna Infantry Regiment. German forces occupied and used the facility during World War II.
The facility takes its name from the Pontlatz Bridge, a structure that witnessed military confrontations during both 1703 and 1809 conflicts.
The barracks serves as headquarters for the Alpine Infantry Battalion 6, which includes two high-altitude mobile infantry companies and Tyrol's emergency relief warehouse. Keep in mind this is an active military facility where access may be restricted.
In 1999 the facility became an emergency operations hub when the Galtür avalanche struck the region. Helicopters launched rescue missions from the grounds to evacuate people from the mountain disaster zone.
