Nixhöhle, Natural cave monument in Frankenfels, Austria.
Nixhöhle is a limestone cave in Frankenfels that extends for about 1,400 meters through mountain passages and contains multiple chambers with significant elevation changes. The underground system displays various natural formations and wide passages carved through the rock.
The cave formed through major movements of the Earth's crust that created breaks and folds in the rock. These geological processes shaped the underground passages and chambers over time.
Local people named this cave after white mineral deposits on the walls, called 'Nix' in the regional dialect. Visitors notice these pale layers throughout the passages, giving the place its distinctive appearance.
From the parking area on road LB 39, there is an uphill walk of about 20 minutes to reach the cave entrance. Guided tours are available from May through October, which is the best time to visit.
Inside the cave are remarkable stone formations, including a natural figure resembling the Madonna, underground waterfalls, and small lakes. These features make different parts of the cave stand out to visitors.
