Pfarrkirche Maria im Dorn, Parish church in Feldkirchen in Kärnten, Austria.
Pfarrkirche Maria im Dorn is a three-aisled Romanesque pillar basilica located above the Tiebel River with a five-story chancel tower. The building combines its Romanesque structure with later gothic and baroque artworks placed inside over different periods.
The building was constructed after 1166 on the site of an earlier wooden structure and fortified in 1476 following Turkish invasions. A few years later in 1480, Hungarian forces briefly occupied it, showing the strategic importance of this border location.
The church name comes from a shepherd who found a Marian image in a thorn bush, a story that still shapes how locals understand this place. The baroque high altar from 1738 and the gothic wing altar reflect how people have expressed their faith through art and decoration across many generations.
The church is accessible daily and located centrally at the end of Kirchgasse in Feldkirchen, easily reached on foot from the town center. If you want more detailed information about the interior or guided visits, contacting the local parish is recommended.
According to legend, a Marian statue that a shepherd found in a thorn bush repeatedly returned to its original spot whenever people moved it elsewhere. This event inspired the founding of the church and gave it the name still used today.
