Meldemannstraße dormitory, Public dormitory in Brigittenau, Vienna, Austria.
The Meldemannstraße dormitory occupies the site at numbers 25 through 29 and consists of four upper floors with small individual sleeping cabins roughly 1.4 by 2.2 meters in size. Each cabin provided workers with a basic but functional sleeping space.
The facility opened in 1905 and provided housing for men at an affordable weekly rate. It operated for nearly a century until closing in 2003.
The dormitory served as a gathering place where workers spent their free time together and built community. Residents used the reading room and workshops to pursue their trades and interests.
The building was equipped with modern conveniences including gas and electric lighting, steam heating, bathrooms, showers, and an on-site physician. The complex was designed so residents had access to essential services all in one place.
A notable resident stayed here from 1910 to 1913 and spent time in the non-smoking reading room painting and discussing politics. These years remain less documented compared to other periods of his life.
