Spullersee, lake in Austria
Spullersee is a mountain lake located near Dalaas at approximately 2000 meters elevation, surrounded by rocky cliffs and green meadows. The deep blue water reflects the sky and mountains, with a dam holding back the water for electricity generation.
The lake was dammed between 1919 and 1925 by the Austrian Federal Railways to support electrification of the Arlberg Railway. Since then it has served electricity generation while maintaining its natural appearance despite this industrial use.
The lake's name reflects its ancient past as a herding and grazing region. Visitors today use the area for walking, fishing, and gathering at mountain huts like the Ravensburger Hut, where people meet for food and rest after outdoor activities.
The lake is best reached during summer months via a hiking bus from Lech, a journey of about half an hour. Driving is also possible but subject to daytime driving restrictions and a toll fee.
The lake is sometimes compared to Caribbean waters due to its striking blue color, though the water here is cooler and clearer. Visitors often report feeling as though they are in a completely natural place despite the modern dam structure, showing how well the installation blends into the mountain landscape.
