Purgathofer-Sternwarte, Research observatory in Klosterneuburg, Austria
The Purgathofer-Sternwarte is a research observatory near Klosterneuburg with a large reflecting telescope whose primary mirror measures 1 meter in diameter. The facility was specifically designed and built to study supernovae, variable stars, and comets.
Rudolf Pressberger created this facility between 1982 and 1989, building both the structure and the telescope with his own hands. Governor Ludwig officially opened the observatory after its completion.
Schools and universities regularly visit the observatory to participate in observation courses and lectures. The facility serves as a place where people can engage directly with astronomy and experience the night sky firsthand.
Access to the observatory typically requires advance registration, as the facility is designed for research purposes and organized visits. It is recommended to contact the administration to learn about opening times and visiting options.
The facility sits at about 400 meters elevation on a hilltop near Vienna, providing good conditions for sky observation. The computer-controlled equipment weighs about 4 tons, showing the scale of technical effort invested in this project.
