Theodor Körner Hof, Public housing complex in Margareten, Vienna, Austria
Theodor Körner Hof is a residential complex in Margareten covering six hectares with around 1,350 apartments arranged in a ring structure around a central tower. The buildings follow a traditional courtyard layout where inner green spaces connect the housing blocks.
The complex was built between 1951 and 1955 on a former hay and horse market site by architects Ladislaus Hruska and Kurt Schlauss. The project was part of Vienna's post-war efforts to provide much-needed housing for the growing population.
The complex is named after an Austrian poet and reflects Vienna's commitment to housing for working people. The spacious courtyards and open areas show how such projects created community spaces where residents naturally gathered.
The site is easy to navigate on foot with multiple pathways winding between buildings and through the green spaces. A tall noise barrier installed in 2007 shields residents from traffic while generating power through integrated solar technology.
The noise barrier incorporates special glass panels designed to prevent bird collisions while generating electricity simultaneously. This innovative combination of environmental protection and renewable energy makes the installation a pioneering example in Vienna.
