Unterberghorn, Alpine summit in Tyrol, Austria

The Unterberghorn is a 1,773 m peak in the Kitzbühel district of Tyrol, the highest between the Wilder Kaiser and Loferer Steinberge. Its twin summits are the main peak and the 1,735 m Hefferthorn. The north ridge, called Unterberg, holds the Unterbergalm at 1,278 m, reached by cable car, with ski lifts covering the north slope.

Shepherds created the initial routes while moving livestock through Alpine pastures during summer grazing seasons. These paths developed over centuries into the hiking network that exists today.

The Unterberghorn is the Hausberg, or local mountain, of Kössen and Kirchdorf in Tirol, and its north slope is served by the Unterberghornbahnen, part of the Schröcksnadel group. The Zellerinalm pasture lies on the eastern flank, while the Unterbergalm sits at 1,278 m on the gentler northern ridge. Paragliders and hang gliders launch here alongside hikers.

You can reach the mountain by cable car from Hochkössen or on foot using the mountain paths. Check weather conditions and bring proper footwear, as terrain can change with the season.
