Schloss Hohenstaffing

Schloss Hohenstaffing is a stone castle on Thierberg mountain above Kufstein, featuring typical elements of Tyrolean fortifications. From this elevated location, views span across the valley below, revealing a structure designed as part of an ambitious early 20th century project.

The castle was built as part of a large hotel complex planned around the turn of the 20th century, with architect Otto Lasne contributing to the design. Construction was never fully completed, leaving this fragmentary record of that era.

The castle displays architectural features from early 20th century Tyrol that remain visible in its stonework and design details. The surrounding Villa Reisch and Villa Lasne illustrate how building styles evolved in this mountain region.

The castle is reachable by following marked hiking trails from Kufstein, with guided tours available during regular hours from March through October. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear and prepare for an uphill walk through the terrain.

The castle was originally designed as just one fifth of a much larger hotel complex that was never completed, making it a rare example of how ambitious Alpine projects sometimes failed to materialize. This unfinished history gives the structure particular significance as a time capsule of early 20th century aspirations.
