Schloss Kassegg

Schloss Kassegg is a castle in the Gesäuse mountains at roughly 752 meters elevation, retaining a west tower and stone walls from its original farmhouse foundation. The structure now combines its historic core with hotel accommodations and dining facilities.

Construction was commissioned in 1886 by Georg Ritter von Aichinger, incorporating elements from an earlier farm called Kahsegger into the south wing. This conversion from agricultural land to residential building reflects the region's growing development during that period.

The building reflects design influences from Bavarian royal architecture of that era, with craftsmanship visible in its towers and stone details. Today, visitors can observe how these aesthetic choices shaped the structure's appearance across its exterior.

The property now operates as a nature hotel with guest rooms, a restaurant, and mountain views accessible from various spots on the grounds. Visitors should expect mountainous terrain and changeable weather due to the elevation, which affects conditions throughout the day.

During Count Czernin's ownership, the castle housed a collection of buffalo and antelope hunting trophies from African expeditions. These items were later repurposed and transformed into costumes worn during local carnival celebrations.
