The Parish Church Maria Elend is a three-aisled Gothic hall church with significant Baroque modifications, its three naves of equal size vaulted with barrel and cap vaults. The two outer aisles are Gothic with tracery windows, while the central nave stems from various building periods. The oldest part is the ground floor of the massive square Romanesque tower, which in its current form is 49 m high.

The church was built by the Ossiach Benedictines after 1267, when they received archdeaconate rights over the upper Rosental. It was destroyed during the Turkish invasions of 1478 and 1483 and reconsecrated in 1486 by Bishop Pietro Carlo of Caorle. Its present form dates from 1682–1690, when Abbot Edmund Ibelbacher of Ossiach lengthened the naves and vaulted them.

The name Maria Elend refers to the Flight into Egypt, the second of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, so the patronal feast is celebrated on 15 September. The high altar was given by the city of Vienna as thanks for its deliverance from the Second Turkish Siege of 1683, and Turkish heads and a crescent are worked into it.

The church stands in the village of Maria Elend in the municipality of Sankt Jakob im Rosental, in the Rosental valley of Carinthia. The massive Romanesque tower, 49 m high in its present form, is the oldest part of the building and serves as a landmark for orientation. The interior is entered from the village side; the late Gothic winged altar is in the south aisle.

The high altar was donated by the city of Vienna as thanks for its liberation from the Second Turkish Siege of 1683; Turkish heads and a crescent moon are carved into it. The central image, "Mother of God with the Christ Child", is made of marbled wood with gold and colour painting and was completed around 1731 by the Klagenfurt painter Johann Marcell Singer.
