Golica

Golica is a mountain peak at 1,835 meters (6,020 feet) that marks the natural border between Slovenia and Austria in the Western Karavanke range. The mountain features rolling meadows and dense forests on its upper slopes.

A mountain shelter once stood near the summit before World War II, but it was deliberately destroyed to prevent its use by German forces. This action was part of border defense measures taken during the conflict.

The spring wildflower display of narcissi draws visitors from both Slovenia and Austria to the mountain slopes. This seasonal blooming has made the location a traditional meeting point for nature enthusiasts crossing the border.

The mountain hut Koča na Golici sits at 1,582 meters (5,190 feet) with basic accommodation available during warmer months. Bring plenty of water and sturdy boots, as the route to the summit requires several hours of hiking.

The wild narcissi covering the slopes contain natural toxins that repel grazing animals, a characteristic that has shaped local farming practices for generations. This poisonous flower has influenced how farmers manage and use the meadows.
