Golica, Mountain peak in Karavanke range, Slovenia and Austria

Golica is a 1,835-metre peak in the Western Karawanks on the border between Slovenia and Austria, above Jesenice. Its upper slopes are covered by pastures and meadows, and a mountain hut with 40 sleeping berths stands at 1,582 metres, 250 metres below the summit.

Two huts once stood on Golica: the original German hut at 1,582 m and a second Slovenian hut at the summit. During the Second World War, partisans burned both to prevent German soldiers from using them. The summit hut was never rebuilt; the present Koča na Golici, with 40 sleeping berths, replaced the lower one.

The spring wildflower display of narcissi draws visitors from both Slovenia and Austria to the mountain slopes. This seasonal blooming has made the location a traditional meeting point for nature enthusiasts crossing the border.

The mountain hut Koča na Golici sits at 1,582 meters (5,190 feet) with basic accommodation available during warmer months. Bring plenty of water and sturdy boots, as the route to the summit requires several hours of hiking.

The wild narcissi covering the slopes contain natural toxins that repel grazing animals, a characteristic that has shaped local farming practices for generations. This poisonous flower has influenced how farmers manage and use the meadows.
