Sankt Magdalena, Monastery ruins in Halltal, Austria
Sankt Magdalena stands at 1287 meters on a terrace of the Haller Zunterkopf north slopes, surrounded by a circular forest clearing containing the church and former chaplaincy.
Founded in 1441 by Hans Frankfurter, administrator of Hall's salt office, the monastery grew to house 24 sisters by 1494 under special protection from Maximilian I.
The late Gothic church structure maintains uniform width between choir and nave, featuring architectural elements with star ribs and keystones in its interior vault.
Visitors reach Sankt Magdalena through a two-hour hike in the Karwendel Nature Park, with the former chaplaincy now serving as a mountain restaurant.
Archaeological excavations near Sankt Magdalena revealed ceramics from the late Hallstatt period, indicating connections to early salt mining activities in the region.
