Cycling Bridge of Freedom, International bicycle bridge between Engelhartstetten, Austria and Devínska Nová Ves, Slovakia
The Cycling Bridge of Freedom is a bicycle and pedestrian crossing over the Morava River that stands 21.5 meters high with a 4-meter wide path connecting two countries. The modern steel structure stretches 525 meters linking the Austrian town of Engelhartstetten directly to the Slovak village of Devínska Nová Ves.
A crossing has existed at this location since the Maria Theresa period, with original pillars from that era still visible near the current structure. The modern bridge was built after the Berlin Wall fell, marking the reopening of this border region to free movement.
The name reflects the political opening that followed the Cold War's end and locals use this crossing as a meeting point between two nations. People gather here not just to pass through, but to pause and enjoy views of the river landscape and the countryside on both sides.
The bridge is accessible year-round from either side and can be visited at any time of day. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be aware that the height and open views above the river may feel overwhelming for some people.
An old military bunker was incorporated into the bridge's construction, a visible remnant from the era when this border separated nations. This unusual feature often makes visitors pause to reflect on how this boundary has changed over decades.
