Former Vienna stock exchange building, Stock exchange building in Innere Stadt, Austria

The former Vienna stock exchange building is a large historic structure in the Innere Stadt district, built in the Renaissance Revival style. Its street-facing facade features rows of arched windows and stone pilasters, while the interior rooms have high ceilings and detailed plasterwork throughout.

The building opened in 1877 as the new home of the Vienna stock exchange, which had previously operated from premises inside the Hofburg. Over the course of the 20th century it gradually lost its trading function and was repurposed for other uses.

The main hall is now used for concerts, corporate events, and private celebrations, giving the building a new role in city life. Walking through it, visitors can still see the original decorative plasterwork and tall windows that shaped the space for over a century.

The building sits along the Ringstrasse, close to the Schottenring tram and metro stops, making it easy to reach on foot or by public transport. Access to the interior is generally only possible through organized tours or booked events, so it is worth checking availability before visiting.

A fire in 1956 badly damaged the main trading hall, and the rebuilding gave that space a completely new roof and interior structure. Yet many of the 19th-century decorative elements survived in other parts of the building and can still be seen today.
