Stadttheater Berndorf, Neo-Renaissance theater in Berndorf, Austria
The Stadttheater Berndorf is a Neo-Renaissance building with a Rococo-style interior and colorful frescoes adorning the facade overlooking a plane tree park. The auditorium holds approximately 488 seats and operates under artistic direction today.
The building was constructed in 1897 by Arthur Krupp to commemorate Emperor Franz Joseph's 50th reign anniversary. It was Austria's first theater built in an industrial location.
The theater has been home to the Berndorf Festival since 1989 and shapes the cultural life of the town with performances during summer months. Visitors experience a living connection between local artistic activity and the place's past.
The theater sits in Berndorf's old town and is easily reached on foot from central locations. With about 488 seats, the venue is intimate in scale, meaning most spots offer good sightlines.
The building survived two major fires in 1902 and 1944 as well as flooding from the Triesting River. Each restoration has preserved the original 19th-century architectural fabric.
