Sternwarteareal, Natural monument and park in Währing, Vienna, Austria.
Sternwarteareal is a 5.8 hectare green area with the University of Vienna Observatory at its center, located in the Cottageviertel district. The grounds feature walking paths throughout and display open lawns alongside dense tree coverage.
The Observatory was built between 1874 and 1879 and was the world's largest observatory building at that time. The grounds were later designated as a nature reserve to protect its green spaces.
The name reflects the astronomical observatory at its core, embodying Vienna's scientific ambitions of the 1800s. Today visitors find a quiet green space where local residents come to walk and spend time outdoors.
The best time to explore is during the warmer months when the lawns are fully accessible. The entrance is near Türkenschanzstraße and is easily reached on foot.
The place hosts more than 100 plant and tree species, forming an important habitat for various animal species. This botanical diversity makes it a surprising retreat within the urban setting.
