Reichersberg Abbey, Augustinian monastery in Reichersberg, Austria.
Reichersberg Abbey is an Augustinian Canons monastery on the bank of the Inn River in Reichersberg, Upper Austria, featuring baroque buildings with onion-domed towers and marble fountains. Several connected structures are arranged around open courtyards, forming a self-contained complex on the riverbank.
A nobleman named Wernher von Reichersberg handed over his castle to the Augustinian Canons in 1084 following the death of his son Gebhard, marking the foundation of the monastery. Over the following centuries the site was shaped by fires and rebuilding phases, and took on its current baroque appearance mainly during the 17th and 18th centuries.
The abbey church, with its onion-domed towers visible from the Inn River, remains the heart of daily life for the canons who live there. Visitors can attend services and sense how religious practice still shapes the rhythm of the entire complex.
A monastery shop on site sells wines, liqueurs, and spirits produced by the community, along with books and regional goods. It is worth checking access conditions before visiting, as parts of the complex may be closed during religious services or at certain times of year.
The abbey library holds around 50,000 volumes, some dating back to the medieval period, and is still in active use by the community rather than kept as a display. This makes it one of the few monastic libraries in the region where the collection serves a living purpose.
