Castel Gartenau, Medieval castle in Hallein, Austria

Castel Gartenau is a medieval castle positioned on the western slope of Gutratsberg mountain, surrounded by agricultural buildings arranged in a horseshoe pattern around a rectangular courtyard. The complex forms an enclosed compound where residential and working spaces are integrated into a single architectural unit.

First documented in 1339, the castle was transformed into a residential seat around 1400 under Rudolf Trauner, the steward of Glanegg. This conversion marks the shift from a purely defensive stronghold to a dwelling place for local nobility.

The Panichner family, who prospered through salt trade, left their mark with a marble coat of arms from 1495 above the eastern entrance. This symbol reflects the connection between the castle's residents and the region's most important industry.

The castle sits on elevated terrain above the town and is visible from exterior viewpoints, but remains private property. Visitors should focus on observing the exterior facades and building arrangement while respecting the privacy of its residents.

Gutratsberg mountain, where the castle stands, became the site of a cement factory operated by the Leube family starting in 1864 and continuing to the present day. This industrial activity alongside the historic residence demonstrates how the location's purpose has evolved over time.
