The Kraiger Schlösser consists of two separate castle structures, Oberkraig and Niederkraig, positioned on the southern slope of Kraiger Mountain above Grassen settlement.
The earliest documented mention of the Lords of Kraig dates to 1091, when they served as ministerials to the Duke of Carinthia in the region.
The castle complex formed part of a defensive ring surrounding the ducal city of Sankt Veit, demonstrating medieval military architecture and territorial control methods.
The ruins remain accessible through steep walking paths, with Niederkraig presenting more preserved structures compared to the higher positioned Oberkraig fortress.
A round-arch aqueduct from the 15th or 16th century connects the two castle structures, representing an advanced medieval water management system.
