Ruinen der Kraiger Schlösser

Ruinen der Kraiger Schlösser, Medieval castle ruins in Frauenstein, Austria.

The Ruinen der Kraiger Schlösser comprise two separate castle structures, Oberkraig and Niederkraig, positioned on a mountain slope above the Grassen settlement. The lower site contains more preserved structures than the higher-positioned Oberkraig fortress.

The Lords of Kraig are first documented in 1091, when they served as ministerials of the Duke of Carinthia in the region. The castle structures developed over subsequent centuries as their power and holdings grew.

The castle complex formed part of a defensive network around the ducal city of Sankt Veit, showing how local nobles controlled the surrounding territory. Visitors can still sense the importance of this hilltop location from the ruins.

The ruins are accessible via steep walking paths that require sturdy footwear and reasonable fitness. The climb offers varying difficulty levels depending on which structure you plan to visit.

A round-arch aqueduct from the 15th or 16th century connects the two castle sites and shows advanced water management techniques of the medieval period. This structure demonstrates that residents could transport water over considerable distances.
