Burg Freiberg

Burg Freiberg is a castle ruin on a hilltop near Frauenstein in Carinthia, with stone remains that clearly reveal the medieval structure. The preserved walls and foundations show the layout of a fortress with multiple levels and defensive structures.

The fortress was first recorded in 1181 and belonged to the Dukes of Carinthia, who used it as a residence and administrative seat. Under Duke Bernhard von Spanheim, the site became an important political center for the region.

The ruins reveal traces of how people lived during the Middle Ages, with wall remains that reflect the daily life of the castle inhabitants. You can sense how this place once functioned as the administrative heart of the region.

The ruins are accessible via marked hiking trails starting from Frauenstein village, climbing through hilly terrain to reach the elevated location. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the path is steep and follows natural ground conditions.
