Schloss Paternion, Protected cultural castle in Paternion, Austria.
Schloss Paternion is a protected castle located south of Paternion's center in Austria. Multiple connected wings form a rectangular courtyard, and the interior contains several vaulted rooms along with a chapel.
The earliest known mention of a fortress in Paternion comes from 1354. The current structure was built in the early 16th century under Sigmund von Dietrichstein.
The chapel inside displays the coats of arms of the Dietrichstein and Widmann noble families who shaped this place over generations. These symbols show the connection between the ruling families and the castle's identity through the centuries.
The castle now operates as a forestry and estate management office for the Foscari-Widmann-Rezzonico family and is not open as a public attraction. Visitors should be aware this is a private property with limited access.
A major fire in 1859 destroyed most of the original 16th-century complex, leaving only the western wing standing. This surviving wing was later rebuilt in 1897 in historicist style and still defines the castle's appearance today.
