The marketplace moved to its present location in 1811 after operating for centuries in the city's main square. The city purchased the site in 1884 to create space for market expansion.

In 1898 a political initiative proposed building Baden's new city theatre, and a market hall, on what was then Leopoldsplatz; the proposal lost the vote and the market stayed. The square was renamed Brusattiplatz in 1936 after mayor Alois Brusatti (1850–1932).
