Schloss Weißenstein, Medieval castle in Matrei in Osttirol, Austria.
Schloss Weißenstein sits on a limestone cliff at 990 meters elevation and overlooks the Matrei valley from its position on the eastern slope. The structure displays both medieval foundations and later 19th-century additions that altered its original appearance.
The castle first appeared in written records in 1160 under the Counts of Lechsgemünd. In 1207 it passed to the Archbishop of Salzburg, beginning a long period of ecclesiastical control that shaped its development.
The Laurentius Chapel inside the castle features exterior frescoes created by Simon von Taisten that reflect the religious art traditions of the region. These painted walls remain visible and contribute to the chapel's character today.
The castle grounds and surrounding park are open to visitors who wish to walk around and explore the exterior spaces. Parking is available in the village center of Matrei, making it convenient to reach the site.
In 1864 the castle underwent major renovations inspired by English castle design, giving it a more romantic appearance than its medieval origins. This redesign took place as the building transformed into an upscale hotel for guests.
