Matrei in Osttirol

Matrei in Osttirol is a municipality located near the Hohe Tauern mountains at 975 meters elevation in East Tyrol. The area spans mountain terrain with forests, meadows, and high alpine landscapes shaped by the surrounding peaks.

The settlement first appeared in written records in 1170, with its name derived from an ancient Indo-European word. The area remained under the authority of Salzburg until the early 19th century.

The Church of St. Alban and the 42 historical structures around it shape the village character and show how faith has been central to local life. These buildings reflect the values and traditions that residents have maintained over centuries.

The Goldried cable car system brings visitors quickly to higher elevations with extensive hiking routes and mountain views. Summer and winter both offer easy access to trails and skiing, depending on the season.

The Innergschlöss Glacier Education Path shows visitors how glaciers shape and reshape the mountain landscape over time. Walking through different zones reveals layers of rock and ice carved by ancient glacial movement.
