Granatspitze, Alpine summit in High Tauern, Austria
Granatspitze is a summit in the High Tauern reaching 3,086 meters, surrounded by three glaciers that shape its steep slopes. The peak offers multiple climbing routes with varying degrees of difficulty for experienced mountaineers.
The mountain was first climbed in 1871 by four mountaineers, marking the beginning of its modern climbing history. Since then it has remained an established objective for technical climbing in the Tauern region.
The mountain draws climbers from around the world seeking to test themselves on steep terrain. This long tradition of mountaineering shapes how local people view their alpine landscape.
The climb starts from Uttendorf village and follows the road up Stubachvalley toward Enzingerboden at around 1,480 meters elevation. From this point, climbers can choose different routes according to their experience and abilities.
The summit and surrounding area are shaped by extensive glaciers in constant flux that make climbing technically demanding. These frozen masses are a striking feature of the landscape that many visitors initially overlook.
