Hoher Kasten, Mountain summit in Appenzell Alps, Switzerland
Hoher Kasten is a mountain summit in the Appenzell Alps located on the border between Switzerland and Austria. The peak sits at about 1,794 meters (5,889 feet) and provides a viewpoint over the surrounding Alpine landscape that spans several countries.
The mountain was first documented in 1802 when Johann Rudolf Steinmüller included detailed descriptions in his publication about the Swiss Alps. This early record established it as an important location in regional geographical study.
The summit represents the meeting point of Alpine traditions from three different regions: Appenzell, St. Gallen, and Vorarlberg.
A cable car connects the valley to the summit and takes only eight minutes to reach the top. The system operates daily except during the annual maintenance period in spring.
A restaurant at the top rotates slowly, completing a full turn roughly every 90 minutes while diners enjoy their meal. It is the only revolving restaurant of its kind in the eastern Alpine region.
