Alte Prager Hütte, Mountain hut in Matrei in Osttirol, Austria
The Alte Prager Hütte stands at 2,489 meters elevation in the Venedigergruppe mountains and functions today as a museum about climbing history. The building houses exhibitions on mountain hut development and also serves as a research base for Hohe Tauern National Park.
The Prague section of the Austrian Alpine Club built the structure in 1872, but an avalanche later destroyed it completely. After reconstruction in 1877, it remained an important base for climbers at this elevation for many decades.
The hut takes its name from the Prague section of the Austrian Alpine Club that built it. Visitors can see how climbers lived back then and what role such shelters played in opening up the Alps.
The museum opens from mid-June to mid-September, though access depends heavily on weather conditions. Visitors should prepare for challenging terrain since the hut is only reachable on foot via alpine trails.
During renovation from 2017 to 2019, the building was restored to its exact 1870s specifications following the original designs. This makes it a rare example of authentic Alpine construction from that era.
