Klammsee, reservoir in Austria
Klammsee is a small mountain reservoir near Kaprun located at the end of a narrow gorge. The water is clear and often turquoise, fed by glacier streams, and surrounded by forests and mountains.
The lake was created as a reservoir for power generation and has shaped the region for decades. Today it primarily serves recreation after the waterpower of the area has been harnessed.
The name Klammsee refers to its location at the end of the Sigmund Thun Klamm, a narrow gorge. Today, the lake serves as a place where visitors find peace after exploring the gorge and experience the quiet of the mountains.
The level walking route around the lake is about 1.3 kilometers long and suitable for families with children, though the final section is not stroller-friendly. Benches and picnic areas invite you to linger, and a visit takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
The water is fed by glacier streams and remains extremely cold even in summer. This extreme cold makes swimming a bold experience that few visitors fully attempt.
