Bad Rotenbrunnen mit Kapelle, Protected spa and chapel in Sonntag, Austria
Bad Rotenbrunnen is a spa facility with seven iron-rich mineral springs located in the Gadental valley at about 1010 meters elevation near the Matonabach stream. The site features a chapel building and provides seasonal bathing treatments under medical care.
The first documented mention of Bad Rotenbrunnen as a healing spa dates to 1460. Weingarten Monastery took over the facility in 1648 and helped establish its permanent use.
The chapel is dedicated to Mary's Visitation and was built in 1860 to replace an earlier religious building from 1687. It remains a quiet spot where visitors can spend time away from the natural spring area.
The facility is located about 2 kilometers from Buchboden and has a parking area for visitors. Medical treatments are available seasonally, so checking current opening times before visiting is recommended.
The springs contain high levels of gypsum and leave distinctive red-brown mineral deposits that set this place apart from other water sources in the region. This color trait is visible at first glance and gives the site a memorable appearance.
