Misthaufen, Mountain summit in Vorarlberg, Austria
Misthaufen is a mountain peak in the Lechquellengebirge range in Vorarlberg, standing at about 2,436 meters above the Großes Walsertal valley. The summit is marked by rocky terrain and steep slopes that form part of the larger Alpine ridge system in western Austria.
The peak has been part of shepherds' territory since the middle ages, when seasonal grazing shaped how people lived in the surrounding valleys. This long history of pastoral use left traces in how the mountain landscape developed over centuries.
The name Misthaufen comes from the language of local farmers and ties the mountain to the Alpine dairy farming traditions of the region. Walking around the slopes today, you can still sense the imprint of pastoral life on how the land is shaped and used.
The approach to this summit works best starting from Buchboden in Großes Walsertal, and you should come prepared for steep terrain and exposed rock. Spring offers the best conditions, particularly from March through May when snow coverage helps with traction.
Mountaineers value this peak for its technical challenge, with the route demanding different skill levels across its various sections. This variation means each ascent offers a different experience depending on the path chosen.
