Wolfgangikirche Hollenegg, Gothic mountain church in Bad Schwanberg, Austria.
Wolfgangikirche Hollenegg is a Gothic mountain chapel situated at 767 meters elevation on a slope near Bad Schwanberg. The structure displays late Gothic features including a three-bay choir, exterior stepped buttresses, and a western bell tower topped with a bulbous dome.
The church was built in 1494 as a larger structure but later reduced in size through bricking up the front arch, leaving only the choir as it appears today. This modification reflects shifting community needs and circumstances across the centuries.
The church honors Saint Wolfgang, a figure deeply venerated in this Alpine region. Visitors can observe how religious devotion shaped the interior decoration, particularly through the altar furnishings and statues of saints that remain on display.
To enter the church, visitors need to obtain the key from the neighboring Kügerl farm since the building is normally locked. The best time to visit is during the hiking season when weather is stable and access routes to the site are easily passable.
The church received the GerambRose award in 2022 for exceptional restoration work and craftsmanship. This recognition highlights how carefully the building was brought back to good condition in recent years.
