Steinbrücke, bridge in Schwaz, Austria
The Steinbrücke is a concrete bridge in Schwaz that crosses the Inn river and connects the main town area with residential neighborhoods on the opposite bank. The structure features a simple, functional design with two large pillars at each end that reflect early 20th-century engineering principles.
The first bridge at this location was built in the 14th century and enabled people and goods to cross the Inn river. After centuries of frequent damage from floods, it was replaced in 1928 with a new concrete structure designed by architect Clemens Holzmeister, which still stands today.
The bridge displays a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, a figure traditionally found on bridges across German-speaking regions. The stone version visible today was installed in the 20th century and remains a defining feature of the crossing.
The crossing is accessible daily for pedestrians and vehicles and directly connects two major parts of town. During periods of high water, temporary closures may occur, so it is helpful to check local weather conditions before visiting.
A new, taller bridge was built alongside the existing structure starting in 2023 and opened in late 2025 to address flood issues and better serve the town. This represents a significant adaptation to modern needs while the original crossing remains protected as a historic monument.
