Dr.-Theodor-Körner-Hauptschule, Heritage-listed middle school in St. Pölten, Austria
Dr. Theodor Körner Schulen is a heritage-protected building housing four independent middle schools with distinctive turret-like corner structures. The building divides into two sections arranged at right angles around a central forecourt, each with separate entrances.
Built between 1949 and 1955 by city architect Tassilo Lendenfeld, the structure rose on the grounds of a former calico factory. This post-war construction served as a major educational facility for the expanding city.
The main stairways feature ceiling frescoes painted by artist Maria Sturm in the different entrances. These artworks give the building an artistic character that sets it apart from typical school structures.
The complex contains multiple school units, each with different specializations including sports, music, economics, and natural sciences. Visitors should identify which school they need in advance since multiple separate entrances serve different sections.
The building originally featured separate entrances designed for boys and girls, reflecting educational practices of the 1950s. This architectural arrangement remains visible today, offering insight into how school segregation was once structured.
