Burgruine Lichtenegg, Wartberg im Mürztal

Burgruine Lichtenegg is a stone fortification in Sankt Barbara im Mürztal situated on elevated ground with thick walls and a tower. The structure displays the typical layout of a medieval fortress, with the ruins commanding a wide view over the valley floor below.

The structure was built starting in the 14th century as a defensive fortification and inhabited by the Liechtenecker family, from whom the location takes its name. Over the centuries, the building was repeatedly modified and expanded before gradually becoming a ruin.

The name derives from the Liechtenecker family that inhabited this place for centuries. Their influence remains visible today through the stone structures and the location itself, which still carries the mark of this lineage.

The ruins can be reached via a clearly marked hiking path that starts behind the train station or through the Scheibgraben forest road. The walk is manageable for most people and takes about half an hour, making sturdy footwear a sensible choice.

The site houses the Rosstall, a preserved hall that is still used for private events today. This building shows how parts of the former fortress continue to serve contemporary community uses.
