Schloss Pellendorf, Heritage castle in Gaweinstal, Austria

Schloss Pellendorf is a castle located on a hilltop at the edge of Pellendorf village in Austria, commanding views over the surrounding area. The structure today houses private residential apartments alongside administrative offices for a large agricultural estate management company.

The castle was founded in 1319 by Simo von Pellendorf as a medieval fortification. After Swedish forces destroyed it in 1645 during regional conflicts, it was rebuilt in 1670 in a new architectural style that defined its appearance for centuries to come.

The castle served as the administrative hub for the surrounding estates under aristocratic rule for centuries, shaping how the region was organized and managed. Its prominent position on the hilltop still reflects that historical role in the landscape today.

The castle is privately owned today, which means public access to the interior is not available. The best way to appreciate the structure is to view it from the surrounding village and countryside, where its hilltop position and architecture are clearly visible.

From 1939 to 1944, the castle served as a temporary refuge camp for people resettled from Bessarabia and Banat during World War II. This lesser-known chapter reveals how the building was converted to emergency housing during wartime, leaving traces of that period in its history.
