Kasemattenbühne, Open-air theatre in Graz, Austria.
The Kasemattenbühne is an open-air theatre in Graz featuring a mobile roof and glass enclosure that allows performances regardless of weather. The sloped floor creates natural stadium seating and accommodates up to 1,700 standing spectators or 999 seated guests.
The theatre emerged from converting former fortification walls that originally protected the Old Town of Graz from above the valley. This transformation of military space into a cultural venue demonstrates how historical structures were adapted for modern entertainment purposes.
The venue uses its historical stone niches as private boxes for smaller groups, creating an intimate setting that blends past military function with present entertainment. Spectators experience performances from different vantage points throughout the fortified structure, making each viewing angle unique.
The venue sits atop Schlossberg and is accessible by lift or funicular railway, avoiding the need for steep walks to reach it. The entrance plaza provides extra space where visitors can gather before or after events.
The roof can retract when weather permits, allowing concerts under open sky, then quickly close during rain or cold snaps. This flexibility lets event planners switch between indoor and outdoor settings on short notice.
