Kath. Pfarrkirche hl. Nikolaus

The Catholic Parish Church of Saint Nicholas sits on a hilltop in Oberndorf and features a distinctive tower with a pointed roof added in 1910. It serves as an active religious center within the Waidhofen an der Thaya deanery of the Diocese of St. Pölten.

The parish was first recorded in 1189 as a proprietary church and later received Gothic additions including side aisles in the 13th century. Further modifications followed as architectural styles changed through the medieval period.

The interior displays Neoclassical design elements from around 1780, with altar paintings by Carl Auerbach and woodwork by Johann W. Killian. This decoration shapes how the space feels when you step inside.

The church can be reached by walking up to the hilltop, where the tower is visible from some distance away. It stands in a location that is easy to find and access on foot.

The building was originally part of a fortified complex with a cemetery and rectory that protected the western entrance to Raabs an der Thaya castle. This arrangement shows how closely the church and castle worked together in medieval times.
