Pfarrkirche hl. Laurenz, Japons

The Parish Church of St. Lawrence in Japons is a parish church with cemetery built in Baroque style featuring Gothic details in the choir section. An eastern tower dominates the exterior, and the entire complex is surrounded by a substantial stone wall.

The church originated around 1100 as a subsidiary chapel and came under the administration of Geras monastery by the mid-12th century. This monastic connection shaped the religious and social development of the village for centuries afterward.

The interior features ornately carved altars with saints depicted in wood and paint, representing the artistic tastes of multiple centuries. These furnishings reflect how the community has invested in creating a beautiful sacred space over generations.

The building is easily recognizable from outside and the cemetery surrounds the entire complex in an open layout. The parish house sits on higher ground to the west, which helps visitors orient themselves within the village setting.

Two bells cast in 1761 by Johann Georg Scheichel still hang in the tower, marking centuries of continuous use in village life. These bronze bells have summoned residents for celebrations, funerals, and daily prayer throughout their existence.
