Martinschlössl, Protected heritage castle in Klosterneuburg, Austria
Martinschlössl is a protected heritage castle in Klosterneuburg featuring multi-story buildings topped with mansard roofs arranged across spacious grounds that slope toward the Danube. The complex showcases Rococo decorations and neo-baroque facades decorated with Ionic pilasters and ornamental details.
Construction began in 1766 under Ludwig Freiherr von Ripke, who unified two existing townhouses into one estate, and major alterations occurred between 1857 and 1869. Those later renovations transformed the complex's appearance significantly.
The palace features elaborate architectural elements including gold-leaf stucco ceilings, Rococo decorations, and neo-baroque facades with Ionic pilaster arrangements.
The property sits at Martinstraße 34 and 36 and remains privately owned, allowing visitors to view it from the surrounding area. The location is easily reached via Donaustraße with views toward the river valley.
The Trapp family, whose story became the basis for the film The Sound of Music, lived in this castle complex. Their residence here connects to one of Austria's most recognizable cultural stories worldwide.
